Sensory Guide
Travelers may experience overstimulation at the Souk visit. The Souk is much smaller that the previous ones visited throughout the trip and might not be busy depending on the season and time. But it can often be crowded with people walking amongst narrow streets while street vendor's and shop owners attempt to invite you into their shop. Travelers who are noise sensitive in large crowds are encouraged to bring earplugs or noise canceling headphones.
Travelers may be overstimulated with the amount of places visited throughout the day. The good news is that they are close to one another! should travelers be overwhelmed by the constant change of area, they are welcome to sit out of an activity to regroup.

As we wrap up our journey, the group will have a transfer from the hotel to the Djerba International Airport. There will be two transfers; one for travelers with early flights, and a second for travelers with later flights. travelers will be placed into a group depending on their departure time.
Travelers who are still around at breakfast time will be served breakfast. some travelers might leave before breakfast becomes available depending on flight times.
If there are travelers who have decided to personally extend their stay and are not flying out on day 10, the local guide can help them with information regarding how to get to their next destination.
Please be warned that public transportation in tunisia is very irregular and has little information online. Should you decide to extend your stay, it is important you do research and talk to the local guide about how to best get to your next location. We don't want any travelers getting stuck after the trip ends!
Goodbye travelers! Safe flight back and stay in touch!
Mandatory Packing Essentials:
comfortable walking shoes
sunglasses or sun hat
a day bag; backpack, tote bag, or purse
personal accommodations and medications to last the duration of the trip
weather appropriate clothing
modest clothing for religious sights; pants, long skirts, shirts that cover your shoulders
Accommodations to consider packing:
We strongly recommend that travelers who are sensitive to heat, bring accommodations to help limit heat discomfort such as; sun hats, sun shirts, sun umbrellas, portable fans, cooling neck cloths, or anything else.
We recommend that all travelers on all of our Neurodivergent Nomads trips bring snacks from home! A comfort snack from home can really help neurodivergent travelers when adjusting to new foods. Plus, sharing snacks with the group can act as a great ice breaker and cultural exchange.
Medinas and Souks that we will be visiting can be loud and chaotic. We recommend that travelers who are sensitive to environments like this, to bring things like earplugs and noice canceling headphones to wear as they walk through.
for travelers who might want to sleep in the van during long car rides, we suggest bringing sleeping accommodations to help you be more comfortable in the van such as; sleep masks, neck pillows, ear plugs, and anything else that may bring you comfort.
Example of a Packing List:
Please note that this is a generic example to help travelers think about packing. Travelers should personalize their packing to their personal needs.

Rest stop bathrooms
We want travelers to be mentally prepared for the rest stop bathrooms on the side of the roads because travelers might not have experienced bathrooms like this before. The bathrooms at rest stops on the side of the highways are very small and have sit down toilets, but don't typically have things like running water to wash your hands or toilet paper to wipe.
Travelers should be aware and pack accordingly for the rest stop bathrooms. things like hand sanitizer, small roll of toilet paper, and wet wipes are all good things to keep with you on the road trip.
Disclaimer for Vegetarians
In Tunisia, people think that vegetarian means that you don't eat meat, but you do eat fish. So, while this trip does accommodate vegetarians, it is important to be aware of this cultural/language confusion. You may have to specify to waiters that you "don't eat meat and you don't eat fish".
Neurodivergent nomads wants this information known so that vegetarian travelers feel confident while navigating ordering food. Instead of telling restaurant staff that you are vegetarian, to limit the cultural confusion and language barrier, it is better to say "I don't eat meat and I don't eat fish". That way, your diet is respected and you are given the correct food!
Modest Clothing for all Genders
During this trip, travelers visit many religious sights. As a sign of respect for the culture, it is important to dress appropriately. Modest clothing for all genders is recommended. Simply putting on pants or wrapping a shawl over your shoulders is a great way to show respect while still dressing in an outfit that is part of your usual wardrobe.
Scarfs, as shown in the image below, are commonly sold in Tunisia and can also be a great souvenir to pick up while you are there! They are not only used to cover your shoulders or keep you warm, but they are also used in the desert as a headwrap to keep sand out of your hair and mouth.
Please see the image below of a simple, respectful, and versatile outfit that works well for religious sights, adventure activities, and desert weather.
Star Wars Cosplay
For travelers who are really into Star Wars, we welcome Star Wars cosplay. Travelers are welcome to bring any clothing or movie memorabilia such as robes, lightsabers, wigs, or anything else.
There are options to rent out clothing and lightsabers at Star Wars filming locations however they are very old, rundown, and might already be rented out by someone else. So we definitely recommend bringing your own stuff if you have it!
We would just like to remind travelers about TSA regulations at airports. Please make sure that whatever you bring is aloud to go on a plane with you! We would hate to see expensive props and memorabilia be taken from travelers at airports.
Tunisia Dinar
Travelers should be aware about the currency in Tunisia. There, they use the Tunisian Dinar. It is considered a "closed currency" meaning that you can only exchange currency when you are there in Tunisia. Travelers, no matter their nationality, will be unable to go to their local bank and pick up Tunisian Dinar.
Travelers will have to exchange money when they arrive to Tunisia. It is very important that travelers do this as soon as they arrive because almost no where in Tunisia do they accept card. You will need cash for every purchase you make. Even in major cities and tourist areas.
We do not have a set amount of money that we recommend for travelers to exchange. That is a personal choice for travelers, as everyone has a different budget. We ask that travelers consider things like shopping for souvenirs, purchasing lunch, giving tips, buying snacks and drinks, paying for optional activities, and other personal expenses when determining how much money to exchange.
Should travelers run out of cash during the trip, the local guide can make a stop and point out ATMs to travelers where they can take out more cash. It is important to ensure that you have cash before the two days spent in the Sahara Desert. Travelers will have no access to ATMs while at the desert camp.
Neurodivergent Nomads provides a travel buddy on most of our trips. The travel buddies role is to be an advocate for travelers. They are the middleman between the tour guides and the travelers.
Their job is to help travelers with small requests, help communicate information to travelers, be an advocate for travelers, and be the person that helps travelers implement accommodations so that travelers feel properly supported throughout the trip.
The Costa Rica Rural Retreat will have a travel buddy accompanying the group. The travel buddy will be chosen based off the needs and demographics of the group.
The group will be introduced to their travel buddy in the trip whatsapp group chat at least 30 days before the group trip starts.
At Neurodivergent Nomads, we design and coordinate group trips specifically for neurodivergent people who love to travel and are looking for a community of like minded people to travel with.
We believe that everyone deserves to travel in a way that feels comfortable, accessible, and welcoming to them. We create trips where neurodivergent people can travel at a pace that feels right for them.
Neurodivergent Nomads is more than a travel company, we are a community. Our main goal is to bring people together and create spaces where people feel comfortable to be themselves. These environments are not only where neurodivergent people thrive, but it's also the environment where long lasting friendships are made.
